Not Dead
for piano, soprano, percussion, and fixed media - 6.5 min
Not Dead is an electro-acoustic chamber work written for soprano, piano, percussion, and an electronic track using selected text from Kurt Vonnegut’s book, Cat’s Cradle. Vonnegut’s experiences fighting in World War II informed his humanistic perspective, and ultimately affected his writing style, which can be described as thoughtful and serious, yet humorous. “You are not dead, but only sleeping” is a phrase that spoke to myself while I was reading the book. It is a declaration of hope, but a delusional and empty kind of hope. There is a grim coldness to Vonnegut’s writing that I tried to express in my setting, framed with the chilling spoken phrases of the electronic track.
