Extended techniques in this composition include slap-tongue, micro-tones, key clicks, and jet whistles in the flute; glissandi, sul ponticello, sul tasto, and col legno in the viola; and hand-muted strings in the piano.
The title of this piece enhances the many ways to break down the word “reaction,” for example, react, act, action, ion, all of which having connotations with energetic movement. This piece is meant to reflect a constant state of movement, energy, and unpredictability.
